With eight years experience in the Netherlands, Holman is yet another Aussie who is well versed in the Dutch system of play, and he has enjoyed regular squad call-ups since debuting for the national team in 2006. Starting out as a forward, Holman is primarily used as an attacking midfielder and has invariably come on for Tim Cahill as a substitute for the Socceroos. Though mostly coming off the bench no Australian outfield player played more matches than Holman during qualification for South Africa 2010.
High energy, mobility, and a willingness to look for short passes are trademarks of Holman’s game. He played at the Olympic Football Tournament Athens 2004 but narrowly missed selection for the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ having secured his first appearance for the Socceroos four months prior to the tournament.
Moving from Sydney club Parramatta Power in 2002, Holman was unable to break into the first-team at Feyenoord, but enjoyed a lengthy and prosperous loan spell at Excelsior helping the tiny Rotterdam club compete in the Eredivisie. Establishing his credentials at NEC resulted in a move to AZ Alkmaar in 2008, and while he found his appearances relatively limited in his first season, he did made a solid contribution and collected a League winners medal as the club finally achieved top-spot in the Eredivisie. This season has been better for Holman who has seen plenty of game time including in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
